About the Trail

The Taylor River Trail is a shared-use corridor used daily by cyclists, walkers, runners and dog owners. The river-level path stays mostly flat and tree-lined, passing through urban reserves before opening into more rural country south of Brayshaw Park. The sealed section is well-maintained and wide enough for families with young children on bikes or in trailers.

The trail passes through several distinct environments. Near Brayshaw Park there are BBQ areas, a playground and the entrance to the Marlborough Museum and Heritage Park. Further south the path runs alongside willow-lined riverbanks with access points to the river. The trees provide shade on summer afternoons.

The unsealed section south of Brayshaw Park is rideable on a hybrid or mountain bike. The gradient stays gentle but the surface becomes rougher approaching the dam. The trail passes the entry to Wither Hills Mountain Bike Park before reaching the dam.

Taylor Dam Reserve

Taylor Dam Reserve at the trail’s end features the Taylor Flood Retention Dam, built in 1965 and described as New Zealand’s largest earth flood-protection structure. The reserve has picnic tables, toilets and a basic children’s playground. Self-contained campervan overnight parking is available (maximum two nights).

What Visitors Often Say

AllTrails reviewers consistently rate the Taylor River Trail as one of the most accessible and pleasant flat rides near Blenheim, noting the shade from riverside trees as particularly welcome on hot summer days. Families regularly mention it as a reliable outing with young children.
