Whites Bay is the closest sandy swimming beach to Blenheim — a sheltered cove about 8 km northeast of the city, tucked below Port Underwood Road on the edge of the Marlborough Sounds. The bay faces northeast, which gives it protection from the prevailing nor’westers that sweep the Wairau Plain. The DOC campsite here operates from Labour Weekend through to Easter, and walking tracks branch into the surrounding bush from the beach end.

About Whites Bay
The bay is named after an American whaler, Black Jack White, who operated in the Marlborough Sounds during the 19th century. Locally it’s also known as Pukatea Bay, after the pukatea trees that line the bush behind the beach. The beach itself is sandy and curves in a gentle arc — it’s wide enough at low tide for beach games and relaxed sunbathing, and the water is relatively calm given the northeast-facing aspect.
The DOC campsite sits in bush behind the beach. Sites are unpowered, and facilities include flush toilets, cold showers and a changing area. The site is popular with families and books out quickly for the Christmas–January period; bookings open online in May each year for the following summer season. From Labour Weekend to Easter, the access gate is locked from 9 pm to 7 am — plan arrival and departure times accordingly.
Swimming Conditions
Whites Bay is a sheltered beach with generally calm conditions. Lifeguards patrol during summer, making it one of the safer supervised swimming options near Blenheim. Water clarity is typically good outside of storm or high-rainfall periods. As with all coastal swimming in Marlborough, avoid entering the water for two to three days after heavy rain, when runoff can affect water quality.
The beach shelves gradually in the main swimming area, making it suitable for families with children. Avoid the rocky ends of the bay where the bottom changes quickly.
Walking Tracks
Several walking tracks begin near the beach. The Pukatea Walk loops through the bush behind the campsite and is popular after dark for its glow worms — take a torch and walk slowly. The Monkey Bay Walk follows the headland south with views back over Whites Bay and toward Rarangi. The Rarangi to Whites Bay Track runs along the coast between the two bays and makes a good return walk with car shuttle. The Blackjack Track climbs into the hills behind the bay and connects to a mountain bike loop.
Mountain Biking
The Whites Bay Loop Track is a mountain bike trail through the steep bush above the bay. It’s rated as a challenging downhill — riders typically drive or ride up the Port Underwood Road access track and descend back toward the beach. The trail has exposed sections and significant grade; beginner and intermediate riders should be aware of the difficulty before attempting it.
What visitors say
“Whites Bay is exactly what you want in a local beach — uncrowded, clean, protected from the wind and there’s a DOC campsite right behind it. The glow worm walk at night is a hidden gem that almost nobody mentions. Book the campsite early for summer.” — Rankers.co.nz review
