About the Library

The Marlborough District Library moved into its new home at Te Kahu o Waipuna in May 2023 — a major upgrade from the previous library premises, with significantly more space and a fully integrated design that places the library within a wider cultural building alongside the art gallery and shared community spaces. The library occupies 1,900 m² of the 3,600 m² building, with the art gallery taking another 600 m² and shared spaces filling the remaining 1,100 m². The Warren and Mahoney-designed building features exterior panels mirroring the shape of the Wither Hills behind Blenheim.

The library serves the whole Marlborough district — Blenheim, Picton, Renwick, the Sounds, the smaller settlements across the region. Lending services, reference, computer and internet access, children’s library spaces, and community programmes all operate from the building. There is a separate Picton library (Waitohi Whare Mātauranga) for Picton-side users.

Te Kahu o Waipuna — The Name

The name Te Kahu o Waipuna translates as “the protective cloak of Waipuna”. A kahu is a traditional Māori cloak symbolising the embracing or protection of people. Waipuna means spring water, referencing the puna (springs) that rise north-west of Blenheim and feed the river that flows past the building. The name was gifted by the three local iwi — Ngāti Toa Rangatira, Ngāti Rārua and Rangitāne o Wairau — and unveiled at the official opening ceremony on 30 June 2023.

Visitor Volume

In the first six months after opening, the building attracted approximately 330,000 visitors — about ten times Blenheim’s population. The high traffic reflects the combined library/gallery/community-space design rather than the library alone: people come for one purpose and engage with another while there. The building has been recognised by multiple architecture awards for the integrated design.
