Blenheim to Renwick Cycle Trail: Riding Through Marlborough Wine Country

The Blenheim to Renwick ride is the most popular recreational cycle in Marlborough — a flat 13-kilometre route through vineyard country that puts riders within reach of more than a dozen cellar doors. The route follows a mix of dedicated bike paths and quiet sealed roads across the Wairau Plain, passing rows of Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vines that have made this region famous. Whether you stop at one winery or five, the ride itself is an easy half-day outing on flat terrain.

About the Route

From central Blenheim the route heads west along the Taylor River path before connecting to the network of quiet country roads that cross the Wairau Plain. The roads are wide and mostly flat, with light traffic outside of harvest season. The approach to Renwick village passes vineyards on both sides — in summer the canopy is thick green; in autumn the vines turn gold before harvest.

Renwick itself is a small village about 13 km west of Blenheim, and the area around it — sometimes called the Golden Mile — clusters more than 14 cellar doors within a few kilometres. Well-known names including Cloudy Bay, Nautilus Estate, Framingham, Spy Valley and Fromm Winery are all accessible by bike from the village. Most cellar doors have bike racks and welcome cyclists; a handful have gravel paths from the road gate to the tasting room.

The return ride is equally flat and follows the same route back. Many riders leave bikes at Renwick and arrange a shuttle to Blenheim if they plan a longer afternoon of tastings.

Bike Hire Options

Several operators make it easy to ride without bringing your own bike. Wine Tours by Bike (winetoursbybike.co.nz) is based in the heart of Renwick and offers bikes, helmets and suggested self-guided routes. Bike 2 Wine (bike2wine.co.nz) operates from the Olde Mill House Bed and Breakfast in Renwick. Bike Hire Marlborough (bikehiremarlborough.co.nz) is based closer to central Blenheim, within 3 km of more than a dozen wineries. All three offer half-day and full-day hire; booking ahead in peak season (November to April) is recommended.

Guided tours are also available through Explore Marlborough (exploremarlborough.co.nz) for those who prefer a group format with a local guide and pre-arranged cellar door visits.

When to Go

The ride works year-round, but summer and autumn are the best seasons. From November through April, the long daylight hours allow a full day of riding and tasting. The Marlborough harvest runs roughly from late February to early April, when the vineyards are at their busiest and most visitor-friendly. Winter rides are cooler but the plains are still pleasant on calm days — expect fewer crowds and the vineyards stripped back to bare canes.

What visitors say

“The ride from Blenheim to Renwick is everything people say it is — flat, beautiful and there’s a winery every few hundred metres once you get out of town. We hired bikes in the morning, stopped at four cellar doors and were back by mid-afternoon completely content.” — travel blog account, 2024
