Rarangi Surfcasting, Marlborough: Seasonal Snapper, Kahawai and Rig

Rarangi Beach 15 minutes north of Blenheim is one of the area’s go-to surfcasting beaches — a shingle beach exposed to Cloudy Bay where local anglers target kahawai (summer schools), rig (spotted spurdog) and seasonal snapper, with occasional elephant fish in calmer spells. The shingle/coarse-sand bottom and open-coast position make it a productive spot for incoming kahawai schools following bait through the shallows. Marine fishing here is governed by MPI’s Challenger area rules.

About Rarangi Surfcasting

Rarangi Beach is a long, exposed shingle beach on the Marlborough coast about 15 minutes from Blenheim — the closest serious surfcasting beach to the town. The shingle bottom and the depth that comes on relatively quickly from shore make it productive for the species that move close inshore through the warmer months.

Kahawai are the most reliable summer target — schools move close to shore chasing baitfish, particularly around dawn and dusk on an incoming tide. Metal lures or cut pilchard cover the casting approach. Rig are present year-round, with cut bait the standard approach — they’re a good winter target when other species are quiet. Snapper reach Rarangi in summer but are less consistent — a possible bonus rather than a guaranteed target. Elephant fish come in on calmer days through summer and early autumn.
