About the Site
Renwick Domain is the local sports ground / community park in central Renwick — and one of the few freedom-camping sites in New Zealand that sits directly in a wine-tasting village. The campsite use is restricted to overnight: vehicles are allowed in from 6pm and must leave by 9am the following morning, with a maximum stay of two nights at the domain. The 2022 bylaw revision increased capacity from 10 to 20 vehicles, making it more practical for the busy summer peak.
The site is one of the five Marlborough District Council freedom camping locations open under the current bylaw — alongside Wynen Street Carpark in central Blenheim, Taylor River Dam south of Blenheim, the Wairau Diversion, and Lake Elterwater Reserve north of Ward.
Renwick as a Base
Renwick’s appeal as an overnight stop is its concentration of wine cellar doors — over 30 wineries within easy cycling or driving distance, with most clustered within 5–10 minutes of each other in or around the village. The village itself has a pub, cafes, a supermarket and bike hire. For self-contained travellers doing a one or two-day wine country tour, Renwick Domain is the obvious base.
