About the Site

The Blenheim Rowing Club has operated on the Wairau River since the late 1800s, and the stretch of river here is well-suited to water sports — wide, reasonably consistent in flow and accessible from Maxwell Road without any long walk. The grassy bank slopes down to the water on one side, with willows and paddocks on the opposite bank.

The site is popular with a mix of users throughout the day — rowers on the water early in the morning, fishers along the bank during cooler hours, and swimmers and waders during summer afternoons. The boat ramp provides hard-standing access to the water’s edge.

Swimming Conditions

The Wairau River here is broader and deeper than sections further upstream. The banks are relatively steep in places, which makes this site unsuitable for young children who cannot swim confidently. Adults and competent swimmers can use the site but should be aware of the current, particularly in higher-flow periods following rain.

Water temperature is cold year-round — the Wairau is an alpine river. In summer the temperature may rise slightly in shallow bank areas but remains bracing. Check that the water is visibly clear before entering; avoid the river for 2–3 days after heavy or prolonged rain even at sites with generally good water quality.

Water Quality

The Wairau River at Blenheim Rowing Club is an officially monitored swim site. Marlborough District Council tests E. coli levels here during summer months. For current readings and any active swim warnings, check LAWA (lawa.org.nz/swim) — search for the Wairau River at Blenheim Rowing Club site. The Swim Guide also lists this location with historical quality data.

Water quality at this site can be affected by agricultural runoff from the Wairau catchment and by urban stormwater after rain. The standard advice — avoid swimming 2–3 days after heavy rain — applies here as at all Marlborough river sites.

Getting There

From central Blenheim, head west along Maxwell Road past the industrial area. The Blenheim Rowing Club is on the left before you cross the Wairau River. Free parking is available at the club. The site is also accessible from the western end of the Taylor River trail network for cyclists.

What visitors say

“Good spot for a swim on a hot day — the grassy bank is pleasant and there’s usually enough room to spread out. The water’s cold but that’s half the point in Marlborough summer. Parking is easy and it’s only a few minutes from town.” — Blenheim local, Neighbourly forum
