Rotary Lookout Track, Wither Hills: Short Climb to Panoramic Blenheim Views

The Rotary Lookout Track is one of the most popular short walks in Wither Hills Farm Park — a 20-minute climb from the car park to a shelter with information panels and panoramic views across the Wairau Plains, Cloudy Bay and the vineyards. It is the best views-for-effort ratio in the park, which is why it’s the standard “first proper walk” most visitors do here. The Rotary Shelter at the top has picnic tables, making it a natural lunch destination.

About the Track

The Rotary Lookout Track climbs out of the Wither Hills Farm Park car park along a sustained but not punishing gradient. Most walkers reach the top in around 20 minutes, with breaks. The lookout itself sits on a saddle on the lower flanks of the Wither Hills — high enough to give a clean view, low enough that it’s accessible to a wide range of fitness levels.

At the top is the Rotary Shelter, a large covered structure with information panels naming the landmarks visible across the Wairau Plains: Blenheim, the wine country to the west, Cloudy Bay to the north-east, and the Richmond Range on the horizon. Picnic tables under the shelter make it a comfortable spot to stop for lunch or a break — out of the wind in any weather.

From the lookout, the track continues if you want to extend the walk. A common loop combines the Rotary Lookout with the Quail Junction track and returns to the car park — around 4 km total, allow 1 hr 15 min. The Gentle Annie track also connects from here for an easier circular variation.

When to Walk and What to Bring

Wither Hills is open hillside with almost no shade — fine in cool weather, brutal at midday in summer. The track is best walked early morning, late afternoon, or in the cooler months. Wear sturdy footwear; the compact gravel can be slippery on the descent, especially after rain.

Fire risk closures apply in summer — the council closes parts of the park during extreme conditions. Check before driving out on a hot, dry, windy day. Bring water; there is none at the shelter.
