The Marlborough Sounds to the north offer sheltered waterways, walking tracks and small settlements reachable by water taxi or winding roads. Nelson and Picton are both within an hour’s drive, while the Kaikōura coast — with its seal colonies, whale watching and mountain backdrop — is around 130 km south on the coastal highway. West along the Wairau Valley, the route opens up toward the Lewis Pass and the West Coast.
