The Ōpaoa River (formerly Opawa) is one of the best urban brown trout fisheries in the Nelson/Marlborough Fish & Game region — a slow, deep, weedy lowland river that loops through Blenheim’s eastern suburbs and runs out to the Wairau and Cloudy Bay. Big resident browns inhabit the lower river, and the spring-fed clear water supports classic sight-fishing for them; sea-run browns also access the system from the lower Wairau. The Opawa River upstream of the State Highway 1 Bridge is open for trout fishing from 1 October to 30 April. A current Nelson/Marlborough Fish & Game licence is required.

About Ōpaoa River Fishing
The Ōpaoa is unusual among Marlborough trout rivers in being almost entirely a slow, deep, weedy lowland river — closer in character to an English chalk stream than a typical NZ alpine river. The river forms at Renwick from the Omaka River joining an old Wairau channel, runs about 13 km as the Upper Ōpaoa to Roses Overflow, then meanders another 15 km of low-gradient tidal channel out to the Wairau. Through Blenheim, the river loops around the eastern suburbs and is joined by the Taylor River near central town.
The fishery is dominated by big resident brown trout in the lower river plus sea-run browns that access the system from the lower Wairau. The spring-fed clear water makes for excellent sight-fishing in good conditions — anglers can spot fish in the deeper holes and present accordingly. It’s recognised as one of the top urban trout fisheries in the country, with central-Blenheim access being part of the appeal.
