The Taylor River is one of Marlborough’s classic spring-creek brown trout fisheries — a small clear-water river that runs through central Blenheim, holding good numbers of brown trout in the lower urban reaches. The Taylor is also designated by Fish & Game as a Family Fishery, with special licensing arrangements for child and junior anglers — making it one of the more accessible introductory trout fisheries in the South Island. A current Nelson/Marlborough Fish & Game licence is required for adult anglers.

About Taylor River Fishing
The Taylor is one of the lowland spring creeks Fish & Game’s Nelson/Marlborough region is known for — small, clear, weedy, with good resident populations of brown trout. The river runs about 23 km from its source in the Taylor Pass area south of Blenheim, north across the Wairau Plain, and into the Ōpaoa River east of central Blenheim. Sea-run brown trout occasionally come up the system from the lower Wairau/Ōpaoa as well, particularly into the lower Taylor.
The fishery is concentrated in the lower urban reaches through and below Blenheim, with the river bank fully accessible via the Taylor River Reserve walkway — sealed path on both sides of the river through most of the town. The clear water makes sight-fishing the standard approach: walk the bank, spot a fish, present a fly. Fly anglers dominate but spinning is also workable.
The Taylor River Family Fishery
Fish & Game has designated the Taylor as a Family Fishery — a special programme that makes the river one of the few NZ rivers where child and junior anglers can fish under more accessible licensing arrangements. The exact terms are in the current Sports Fishing Regulations and may include free or reduced-cost junior licences for the river specifically. The goal is to provide an introduction-to-trout-fishing environment where families can teach kids without the full licensing barrier — particularly relevant for an urban river running through the middle of town. Always check the current Family Fishery terms with Fish & Game before relying on them.
