About Picton Foreshore Reserve

The foreshore lines the waterfront of central Picton. The council lists it as a must when visiting the Marlborough Sounds, and its features are simple: a paved boulevard for walking, lawns, a sandy beach and things for children to do. It is also the setting for bigger occasions, and the council asks organisers of major events to book.

The ground has changed use over time. The independent Marlborough Online guide, a privately run website, says the reserve stands on the site of Picton’s former railway station, and that it has been remodelled several times.

Earlier features included a shallow concrete paddling pool with a Donald Duck sculpture and a concrete whale slide, which were replaced by today’s pirate ship playground and water play area.

The same guide mentions the foreshore’s phoenix palms, a sailing pond and the Picton Heritage and Whaling Museum at the southern end of the reserve, and names the Picton Maritime Festival and Marlborough’s New Year celebrations among the events held here.

London Quay and the Waterfront

At the corner of London Quay and Wellington Street, the council’s London Quay reserve joins the foreshore. The council describes it as “a place to relax”, a spot for a market and a boarding point for launches, with access from there to the foreshore, Shelly Beach and Victoria Domain.

For Families

For children, the council lists a playground and a water play area, and the Marlborough Online guide describes the playground’s pirate ship and says the water play area runs in summer. Model railway rides are another council-listed attraction. Because dogs are banned from the whole foreshore area, including the beach, leave them at home or walk them elsewhere.
