Taylor River Trail is Blenheim’s best flat cycling and walking route — a shared-use path that follows the Taylor River from the town centre all the way to Taylor Dam Reserve, about 10 km to the south. The sealed urban section runs roughly 4.6 km on concrete paths along both sides of the river from Quays Riverside Park to Brayshaw Park. South of Brayshaw Park, an unsealed gravel path continues another 5 km up to the dam. Most families and casual cyclists stick to the flat sealed section; mountain bikers and keener cyclists use the full return route as a half-day outing.

About the Trail
The Taylor River Trail is a shared-use corridor used by cyclists, walkers, runners, and dog owners daily. The river-level path stays mostly flat and tree-lined, passing through the urban reserves that border the Taylor River before opening up into more rural paddock country south of Brayshaw Park. The sealed section is well-maintained and wide enough for families with young children on bikes or in trailers without difficulty.
The trail passes through several distinct environments on its way south. Near Brayshaw Park there are BBQ areas, a playground, and the entrance to the Marlborough Museum and Heritage Park. Further south, the path runs alongside willow-lined riverbanks with access points to the river itself for a paddle on warm days. The trees provide useful shade on summer afternoons when the nor’west picks up.
The unsealed section south of Brayshaw Park is rideable on a hybrid or mountain bike. The gradient stays gentle but the surface becomes rougher approaching the dam. The trail passes the entry to Wither Hills Mountain Bike Park before reaching the dam.
Taylor Dam Reserve
Taylor Dam Reserve at the trail’s end is notable as New Zealand’s largest earth flood-protection dam. The reserve has picnic tables, toilets, and a basic children’s playground. Campervan overnight parking is available for self-contained vehicles (12 spaces, maximum two nights).
What Visitors Say
