Residents value the combination of countryside living with quick access to town amenities and green spaces. The settlement includes residential streets, a primary school that acts as a local hub, and direct proximity to the Wairau River.

The village takes its name from the surrounding area and is most visible to visitors through its connection to Grovetown Lagoon. This oxbow lake formed when the Wairau River cut off a bend, creating a standalone wetland feature. The lagoon and surrounding areas hold cultural significance as mahinga kai for local iwi, who have partnered in restoration work since 2002.

Restoration efforts by the Grovetown Lagoon Restoration Project involve Marlborough District Council, iwi groups including Te Rūnanga a Rangitāne o Wairau, Ngāti Rārua and Ngāti Toa Rangatira, the Department of Conservation and the community. The project focuses on enhancing natural values in this one of the larger remaining wetland areas on the Wairau Plain.
