What ERO found

The Education Review Office’s latest report on the school is a School Evaluation Report from December 2024. ERO found most students reach or pass expected curriculum levels in reading, writing and maths, most feel they belong, and most attend regularly, so the school meets the Ministry’s attendance target.

Leadership is strong and collaborative, teachers get targeted training and feedback, student progress is tracked closely, and students have plenty of chances to take part in activities and leadership roles. ERO noted the school has not yet closed the gap for Māori and Pacific students in maths, and that some students’ progress is held back by absences.

The agreed next steps are to build closer partnerships with whānau around students’ progress, shape the local curriculum so it reflects all cultures, identities and languages, help teachers put school-wide changes in place to speed up progress, and keep working with whānau and attendance services where absence affects learning.

Enrolling

Witherlea School has a home zone, and students who live in it have the right to enrol. Out-of-zone students can only get a place through the ballot, which the school board sets each year for the following year depending on space. A ballot place does not automatically carry over to a younger sibling.

Families enrol through the school’s online enrolment form and provide the supporting documents the school lists. New entrants start in cohort intakes, and the school sets out its enrolment scheme, zone map and entry details on its enrolment page.
