What ERO found

The Education Review Office’s latest report on the school is a School Report from February 2025, in which ERO recorded concerns about the quality of education at the school.

Fewer than half of students meet or exceed curriculum expectations in reading, writing and maths, achievement has not improved for the students most at risk since the previous review, students with complex needs need better support, and attendance is behind the government target with chronic absence not yet falling.

ERO noted the school has a high number of students with complex learning and behaviour needs, said it must make sure the environment is physically and emotionally safe, and recommended that the Ministry of Education give the school tailored support with leadership of learning.

The board was also found not to have met two legal requirements, on consulting about the health curriculum and on health and safety reporting, and has since taken steps to address them. On the positive side, Māori students achieve higher than other students, the board and leaders consult the community well, and teachers have trained in structured literacy.

The agreed next steps are to strengthen the teaching of literacy and maths to lift achievement for all students, improve how teachers and leaders analyse and use progress data, and review and extend the school’s work on regular attendance, reporting progress to the board and community.
